Of Breaking News, Corrections and Impatient Kenyans

On the afternoon of Friday, June 7, 2013, Kenyans were waiting on President Uhuru Kenyatta to announce the nominees who were to fill the positions to Principal Secretaries in his new Government.
It all started with the usual dispatch from State House that he would make the announcement at 2pm.

  1. Journalists (I included) and media houses took the cue and made the announcement on social media which has become the new way of breaking news.
However, another dispatch was sent from State House minutes later pushing the announcement to 4pm, and the same journalists and media house had to break the same news again or offer corrections.
  2. President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy William Ruto to release the names of Principal Secretaries nominees at 2pm at State House, Nairobi.
  3. The naming of Principal Secretaries pushed to 4pm.
  4. President @UKenyatta & his Deputy @WilliamsRuto scheduled to release a list of Principal Secretary nominees at 2pm at State House, Nairobi.

  10. Announcement of the list of the Principal Secretaries by President @UKenyatta and his Deputy @WilliamsRuto moved to 4pm
  11. With these sort of corrections, may be it is time journalists took a different approach of not specifying the time given by State House as illustrated below. The House on the Hill now has the reputation of keeping people waiting. When the President was to announce his second batch of Cabinet Secretaries, the announcement was moved from 4pm to 6pm and eventually the following day at 9am but happened around 2pm.
