My trust for Obama, is as that of ODM

I have kept my promise of stating away from politics for 12 weeks, though you may argue that I have not been writing as much either. Thats for another day.
I have quietly been observing the political scene as we come close to the end of the first quarter of the election year. Obama has finally declared that he wants to take Bush’s job; ODM-K seem to be working on another MOU (only that this time it is very far from the elections) and Narc-K MPs seem to be obssessed with the number two position.
But funny enough these ODM-K and Narc-K characters still do not trust each other and they may still be wondering why I dont trust them. I have however observed that the major issue with Kenya politics is neither ODM-K nor NARC-K, but the individuals that associated with the two.
What does this have to do with Obama? Obama is seen as a “the next Kenya saviour” in the land of opportunities. Actually I have heard several Kenya, especially those from the lake region, talk of how easy it will be to get a Visa to the US once Obama takes office. Call it whatever you wish but I call this short-sightedness. How can any intelligent Kenyan think that Obama cares a bit about poverty in Africa? If he surely did, hw woulld already be channeling or atleast trying to channel what he can to developments projects in Africa. How many times does the word Kenya of Africa appear in any of “America’s next president’s” speeches? And that the point if elected Obam is elected, he will be America’s president not Kenyan. not African and indeed not the Global president. So Kenyans should be careful not to be used by Obama as stepping stones, as they will remain just that. America is not as Kenya where the president makes decisions at will.
Same with ODM-K, why have we not seen any projects from their side if at all they are leaders? by this point in the year I believe that this guys must have fundraised cash to the tunes of billions of Kenyan shillings for their campaigns later in the year. Same case for Narc-K, there are so amny pending files in government offices for them to hop here and there making for political rallies, and fighting for second place. What we really need to do is come up with a strategy of vetting this guys individially. Party sponsorship is important as we need to know who will be supporting who but we need to move above this petty party politics and move into policy matters.
In a matter related or closely related, watch this space to find out what university students think of the 2007 polls.

  1. Barack Obama is an American citizen. He is not running as a Kenyan. He is running to represent his people. While we (Kenyans) share a connection with his person, based on the fact that his father was a Kenyan, we do not have any claim to his attention as a possible President of the United States. The United States as a nation chooses its foreign policy based on its interests. If Barack Obama does become President of the United States, he has no obligation to the people of Kenya because he is an American citizen representing his people. (Story in Local Paper by Herman)

  3. Sad fact but true. Chances are indeed high that Obama might never think of the “mama land”. Let’s hope for the best. You just never know!
